Thanks for sharing this! It caught my eye some weeks ago. It has already been implemented and will be released as part of Obi 6.0 under the name "Surface collisions". You can see it in action here:

About 10-15% heavier than regular, per-particle contacts. However since this allows you to use fewer particles and still get accurate collisions, it usually ends up being cheaper (as there's less elements to collide with).
