But when the display particle execution is turned off, it seems that only the lower half of the model is shaking, and the upper half is completely motionless.
In both cases the simulation looks identical to me: the upper part is motionless regardless of particles being visible or not. This means the upper part of the mesh is not bound to the particles.
If you want the entire mesh to deform, make sure that you've bound the entirety of the mesh to the particles and that there's no painted-out vertices (in the skinner's "paint influence" mode).
