By default, Obi emits anisotropic particles --> ellipsoids that approximate the local surface shape. Just make sure your max anisotropy setting (found in the solver) is set > 1. See:

Other than ellipsoids, it is not possible to emit any other shape since Obi is inherently particle-based.
